Parish News for July 2013

The month of June has been incredibly busy at the Parish Council office. The internal audit took place at the very end of May and the Parish Council was given a clean bill of health. Documentation has now been prepared and sent to Littlejohn for the annual external audit.

Casual Vacancy: Following the resignation of Councillor Jayne Bramwell, the Parish Council has a casual vacancy. The Notice of Vacancy has been displayed for 14 days and no requests for a by-election have been received by Wealden District Council. The Parish Council may now co-opt a suitable candidate. If you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor please forward your CV to the office with a covering letter outlining why you think you would be a valued member of the Parish Council and any areas of expertise that you could offer.

Litter Picking: The first volunteer litter picking session took place on Saturday, 15th June. It was a great success and the volunteers all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Going off in pairs meant that they could have a good natter at the same time. If you would like to join the team of volunteers, the next litter picking morning will take place on Saturday, 20th July, meeting at 9.30am at the Parish Council Office (The Old Manor House in the High Street).

Additionally, litter picking is scheduled over the next 3 months – on the 3rd Saturday of the month: 20th July, 17th August and 21st September, but we are not sure if it will run through the winter.

Five Ashes War Memorial: A big THANK YOU to everyone who has very generously donated money towards the restoration of the Five Ashes War Memorial. I am pleased to be able to confirm that we have reached the target of £1,700 and that the work is scheduled to go ahead in the summer.

Walks Around Mayfield and Five Ashes: For those who enjoy walking there is a collection of ten local walks in the “Guide to Walks Around Mayfield and Five Ashes”. The walks are between 3km (1.5 miles) and 9.5km (6 miles) long and the guide is available for £5 from Handley’s, Freeman Forman, Four Winds, The Flower House, the Rose and Crown and Parish Council office.

FIVE ASHES Speedwatch: The Speedwatch team in Five Ashes is still looking for more volunteers to join them. Volunteers are trained to use speed indicator devices which display vehicle speed. The registered owner of any vehicle seen exceeding the speed limit is sent an advisory letter explaining that speeding is unacceptable to the local community and to educate motorists. To get involved, please contact Councillor Elaine Wheeler: or phone 01892 830809.

Boundary Hedges and Trees: Now that the leaves have finally unfurled it is a good time to check boundary hedges and trees to make sure that they are not obscuring street lights and road signs. In the interests of road safety they need to be kept cut back to keep visibility to a maximum.

PUBLIC OPENING TIMES: The opening times for the Parish Council office are now on Mondays (9.00 – 11.00am), Wednesdays (9.00am – 12 noon) and Fridays (9.00 – 11.00am).
