MAYFACS update – November

This is news that unfortunately was not in the November print edition of the Mayfield and Five Ashes newsletter:

There are some really important pieces of information in this article so please read on and get in touch with us as soon as possible if required to do so.

Tuesday Afternoon Club (T.A.C)

If you have not tried this before, why not come along to T.A.C. on the first Tuesday of the month? This month we have a talk from someone in the banking industry on keeping ourselves safe from scams. In December, our Christmas meeting, we will be entertained by our very own primary school children, who will also be joining us for tea.

Cottage Hospice Research

At our Five Ashes lunch on Friday, 2 November, we are welcoming Dr Helen Barnes from Lancaster University. She is hoping that between 10 and 15 residents, mostly from Five Ashes, will stay for an hour after lunch and take part in a group discussion about the new hospice being built in Five Ashes. If you would like to take part in this discussion but are not coming to the lunch first, please let us know as we have some paperwork you’ll need to read.

The MAYFACS Office & Opening Times

We are beginning to make improvements to the Old Library to make it a more comfortable working environment, beginning with more kilowatts of electricity. It means during the winter we won’t have to turn the heater off to boil the kettle! We are also extremely grateful to the Management Committee of the Memorial Hall for granting us permission to go ahead and apply for planning permission to build a small, wooden extension which will mean we can have toilet and sink facilities on site. We will keep you updated.

Also, we are now open on Wednesdays. If the A frame is outside, we are there.

Do check out our A frame as it holds lots of information, not just about our events, but other things happening in the villages.

New Chess Club

Do you play chess? Would you be willing to come and play and teach the children at Mayfield Primary School on a Wednesday lunch time? We have about 6 young people who love to play chess but would like to play against some other people. Miss Warren has agreed to set up a chess club on a Wednesday lunchtime from 12.30-1pm in the school. Please contact Freya on 07866628170 or the school if you are interested. First one to be held on 31st Oct at 12.30-1pm.

New Middle House Memory Mornings

A place for people with dementia and their carers to meet others in a similar situation, in a relaxed social setting. You can spend time sharing information and experiences, or simply have a cup of tea and a chat. Held on Monday mornings at the Middle House from 10-12. Free to attend and complimentary refreshments are available. First one to be held on 5th November.

Mayfield School – Live Crib

A date for your diary. If you prefer not to venture out in the evening, Mayfield School have kindly extended an invitation to attend an afternoon performance of The Live Crib on Monday, 10 December starting at 2pm. Please contact us, not the school, if you would like to attend as places will be limited. Transport can be provided.

Printing and Photocopying Service

If you have a document you need printing or photocopying, please call and see us. If you put the document into PDF format, on a memory stick, we can print it from that. Basic prices are 5p per A4 mono and 10p per A4 colour. Come and see us to find out more.

Ceramics Mornings

Our first ceramic session was a success and we received lots of positive feedback. All those involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves and created some wonderful tiles whilst meeting some new people. We have a Christmas special session on 9 November at 10am – 12pm in Mayfield Scout and Guide Hall. You will be able to come and paint Christmas decorations, baubles and gifts for loved ones, such as mugs and money boxes. Prices will vary depending on the item you paint. Tea and cake will be available. We anticipate that this will be a busy session, so we ask that you come into the MAYFACS office with a deposit of £5 to secure your place. We are in the office most Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9am – 4pm.

Matinee Film Afternoons

This month’s film on 23 November is Bridge of Spies and is an excellent film, full of intrigue. We will have an intermission to allow for tea and cake! If you need transport by minibus to and from the film it’s important that you tell us now.

Film, food and drink

As a reminder, the Five Ashes soup lunches moves to the Memorial Hall just for Friday, 7 December. Come and enjoy delicious home-made soup, roll and fruit from 12pm and bring your own alcohol to share if you like. This will be followed by Murder on the Orient Express with tea and cake for the interval. What a lovely way to spend a winter’s afternoon!
