Mayfield and Five Ashes are located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  It is an area of rolling hills and Mayfield is perched on top of one of the east west ridges with views north and south.  Five Ashes is centred on the A267 running north south with views to valleys to the north-east and south-west.

The countryside is made up of scattered woods and shaws, irregularly shaped fields and small farms.  Many signs of its habitation over the centuries are visible as you walk along its many paths and bridleways with sunken tracks as well as mounds and ditches indicating ancient boundaries.
